I know this post is late… My son and I made a shirt cake with tie cake for father’s day and his father’s birthday. That weekend I felt like I ran a cake marathon. Nevertheless, I made four cakes and sixty-five cake pops. This entailed eight pounds of fondant (homemade of course), three batches of Italian Meringue buttercream and one batch of chocolate ganache. This is the first time I had to use both mixers. However, I made it through to tell the story (well… barely).
No problem.. Boy was I wrong…I am tired just writing about it. Even with good planning, all the bumps in the road made it quite a task. The first cake on my agenda was a teapot cake (see post), then an Avengers/marvel theme cake for my nephews birthday, a black and gold tiered cake with a fondant crown and a shirt and tie cake. What was I was thinking?
His vision, he wanted a blue shirt like dads and a blue and red tie. He also thought it was funny if we added a slice of (fondant) cheese to the tie. As always, he allows me to bake and frost the cake, but he was in charge of design.
This cake was one of the easiest. The cake was my delicious chocolate cake that was filled it with a Nutella buttercream. I ganached the outside for sharp edges. I added two coats of ganache. After the ganache was set, I covered the cake with blue fondant. I made the tie, shirt collar and pocket from a template. In addition, I cut a strip of blue fondant and stitched the side for the front of the shirt. My son and I cut out a few round circles to create the button. We used piping tips for circles and a size 2 tip for the small holes.
We added the fondant strip with the buttons, the tie, the pocket with the cheese, the collar and a small tag. See… very easy. Happy belated birthday Sr.
