How to Make Easy Edible Lace

Edible lace is that one cake decorating tool that is classic and timeless.  To be honest it is plain gorgeous.  It is mostly used on wedding and celebration cakes but can be used with desserts.  Lately, I have been looking for ways to use my cake tools on hand.  This is so hard because of all the silicone mats etc that are on the market.  In this tutorial learn how to make easy flexible edible lace.

How to Make Edible Lace?

Ok, but I admit I am borderline obsessed with edible lace and I have another tutorial using a different lace material. However, instead of using Claire Bowman’s cake lace mixture, I am using Flex Frost Edible Icing (fabric) sheets. Frosting sheets can be ordered in just about any color.  I like it because, in just four easy steps, you have flexible edible lace.

The sheer easiness of the frosting sheets is one of the reasons I chose it. I tried it and loved it.Edible Lace Tutorial|In this tutorial learn how to make easy flexible edible lace in these easy steps.

Here are the materials you are going to need:

  • Black Flex Frost Edible Icing Sheet – I get them from Icing images (not an affiliate) and they ship very quickly.
  • Silicone lace mold – I used one that I purchased on Amazon, but you can use any lace mold.  The more intricate the mold the harder it is to remove the lace.
  • Water- You will need cold water.
  • Scraper– Any scraper works here, however, I prefer to use flexible scrapers.
  • Brush (optional)

Steps:

  • Cut your Flex Frost Edible Icing Sheet to the size of the silicone mold. The good thing about these sheets is that you can use scraps to fill in any gaps.  Edible lace tutorial, cut the flex sheet to size
  • Remove the icing sheet from the backing.Edible lace tutorial, remove the sheet from the backing
  • Carefully dip the sheet in the water.  Don’t dip it too much here or it will start dissolving.
  • Place on the silicone mat and let it fill in the mold. Then use the scraper to fill in all the areas on the mat.  If you need more, check the scraper and/or use another piece from the sheet.Edible lace tutorial, add the sheet to the lace and fill in all the gaps
  • Let it sit for about 30 minutes.  If you are in a pinch, heat the oven turn it off, then place it in the oven for about 5 minutes.
  • Demold very carefully, however, it can be stuck back together again using water.

How do you Use Edible Lace?

Traditionally edible lace is used on cakes, cookies, or other desserts.  However, I used it on a sugar shoe, because I wanted a delicate design that neither fondant nor gum paste would give me.  After removing it from the mold, I measured it on the shoe, cut along the lines, and added using just a bit of water.  I used a brush to add water to the lace and the sugar shoe.Flexible Edible lace, adding to sugar shoe.

Can I add Edible Lace to Buttercream or Fondant?

Edible lace can be added to buttercream cakes as well as fondant cakes.  If the mold is not large enough to go around the cake, use a touch of water to join the pieces together.

That’s it easy flexible edible lace/fabric in no time.  If you like this tutorial don’t forget to share and pin for later.  Until next time happy caking.
