I am finally getting to part III of how to make a wedding cake series. It’s been a minute so let’s catch up. The buttercream e-book is going through the final stages and will be available at the end of August. Super excited about that. Let’s recap, In part I, I shared my secret for sketching cake designs and in part II I showed how to make the classic and beautiful edible cake lace. In this post, we are putting it all together. I am going to show you how I make an easy fondant bow and how to make a fondant skirt.
So… I can’t say this cake did not come without its challenges. The most issue, I had was deciding whether to use royal icing or fondant for the flowers section. Finally, I decided to use the edible lace because done is better than perfect. Since I was the client, I took the liberty of changing the design. Now that is all out of the way let’s get ready to finish this cake.

How to make a fondant bow
To make a fondant bow we are going need white fondant, and tylose powder. Knead them together and let it sit for a few minutes.
Knead the fondant together again and roll it into a long strip. Then adjust a ribbon cutter to the size that you need. I love using the cake boss ribbon cutter for this.
Use the ribbon cutter to cut a strip of fondant.
Cut the ends, then add some water or shortening to the ends of the fondant and let both ends meet in the middle. Place something at the end to keep the loop open.
Pinch the middle section of the bow where both ends meet.
Turn the bow over to the other side. Make to keep the loops open. I used a paintbrush and my Xacto knife to hold the loop until I was finished.
Cut a small strip of fondant to cover the center of the bow. Then lay it over the top of the bow.
Flip the bow over and add water or piping gel to the middle of the bow and the ends of the strip as well.
Trim off the excess and adhere the other end to seal the strip. Flip the bow over and add paper to the loops so that they can keep their shape.
Let the bow dry for a few days.
How to make a fondant skirt and add to the side of a cake
Making a fondant skirt is super easy and it looks so great for minimal work.
To make fondant skirt, roll out white fondant to about 1/8 inch in large rectangle pieces.
Take a smaller piece and pinch the top together.
Add shortening and place on to the side of the cake. Overlap the next strip of fondant on the last to make it look like it’s the bottom of the dress.
Dust the fondant skirt with edible pearl petal dust.
Then use a small flower mold make a few tiny flowers.
Add the fondant flowers to the bottom of the skirt.
To add the bow melt some white candy melt and add the bow to the cake in between the tiers.
Make a strip of edible pearls using a pearl mold. Then dust them with pearl dust and add to the back of the cake.
