If you love Unicorns, you will love these Unicorn cupcakes. Finally, I got a chance to make something Unicorn. Are Unicorns a thing? Well… from what I have seen this cake trend does not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. I am a little late to the party, but ah well. Recently, I created a few course outlines for cake decorating classes and one of them includes you guessed it unicorn cupcakes. I was super excited to make them and loved that they were super easy to make.
Before my initial attempt to make the unicorn cupcakes, I sat down and created templates for the unicorn horn and ears. To get the free template click here.

The Unicorn horns need time to harden, so it is important to give yourself ample time. To make the Unicorn horn take a small amount of fondant white or yellow and add some tylose powder. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. Then divide into two small balls.
Roll one of the balls into a long sausage. Use a fondant smoother to roll it out evenly.
Then cut two small pieces the size of fondant the length of the horn on the template.
Using a Xacto knife, cut to the fondant to the size of the template
Pinch the end of the two pieces of fondant together and begin to twist them together to form a rope.
The unicorn horn will end up getting a bit larger than the template. This perfectly normal. Twist it until you are happy.
Trim the unicorn horn with your Xacto knife.
Then add the toothpick. You will need to trim the Unicorn horn again as it is much longer than the template. Make as many as you need.
Place them on a stand to dry. If you notice I had different heights. I trimmed it down before I added them to the cupcakes.
Using some vodka and edible gold dust make some paint and paint the horns gold. The paint should dry very quickly.
To make the Unicorn ear, roll out a piece of fondant. Then cut out one of the templates for the ear and place on top of the fondant. Using your Xacto knife cut around the template. Make two ears for each unicorn cupcakes.
Paint the center of the unicorn ear with some of the gold paint.
Roll out a piece of fondant and using a circle cutter, cut out as many circles as needed to cover the cupcakes. Let them sit for a minute while you frost the cupcakes.
Using a small spatula add some frosting to the top of the cupcakes. I had originally planned to pipe the frosting but changed my mind. I know it doesn’t look pretty, but it is going to be covered up with the fondant circle.
Then add the fondant circles to the top of the cupcakes.
Add the horn to the middle of the cupcake. To make the small rosettes hold you hand 90 degrees, then squeeze your frosting pouch (or piping bag) in a circular motion and release pressure. The Wilton icing pouches come with a star tip and a round tip.
Then add the ears.
Make tiny rosettes for the back of the cupcakes as well. Using an edible black pen, make eyelashes.
That’s it you are done. That was easy right?
