How to make a Cake Delivery Box: Transform a regular cake box to fit your cake

I don’t know how many times I made a cake and then stress about the cake delivery box afterward.  I was constantly looking for a better solution for cake delivery boxes.  If you are like me you have regular cake boxes.  The ones I have the most of are 10x10x5 that I bought in bulk (not really sure what I was thinking here).  Such a pity because I found out pretty quickly that a lot of the cakes I made did not fit in the regular cake boxes. Ugh… When I found this out I threw my hands up, now what do I do?  If you are nodding your head in agreement I got you.

As a result, I bought boxes everywhere I thought looked like they worked such as Ikea, shipping boxes and hat boxes (I love these, but they are so expensive).  Awhile back, I needed a cake delivery box, but the other boxes were too big I started looking at the smaller boxes I had.  After all, I had thousands of them.  That’s when the light bulb went off, why not use the small cake boxes.  I could not believe it, I finally came up with a solution to my cake delivery box situation by only making a few small adjustments to the box.  I always have in-house foam core board and cake boards I use both depending on what I need.  Genius… Why didn’t I think about this before?

So today, I am going to show you how I transformed two different types of cake boxes to make a cake delivery box that not only fits the cake but looks professional (at least I think so).  This is also a great solution if the client picks up the cake.

The million-dollar question is how do I transport the cakes?  See the five secrets to delivering cakes here.

Things to consider:

  • The size of your cake
  • The size of the cake board
  • Decorations for the cake board
  • The height of your cake
  • How many tiers?
  • The shape and design of the cake

The size, weight and cake decorations determine the size of the cake base and the type of board used.  By that, I mean the choice between MDF or a foam core board.  Heavier cakes require a more stable board.  Regular cake circles will not be sufficient for a two-tier cake, use a cake base (sold at your local craft store) or make your own from foam core.  Cakes with handles such as a guitar or violin (standing up that is) require some more planning.

For a more complex cake here are the steps to make this delivery box

Materials:

  1. Use a shipping box (determine the size based on the height and the base of the cake). In this example, I am using a hatbox that is 16 X 16 X 7 that I am transforming to fit a Minion Cake.
  2. Add a piece of foam core board to the bottom and top of one of the box. Measure the length of the box x2. Test out the length by attaching the top of the box with the foam core inside.  Leave enough for an overlap. How to Make a cake delivery box|Learn how to transform a regular cake box to fit your cakes|How to set up the cake box for transport
  3. Attach the foam core board to the top and the bottom. Tape the side of the box.
  4. For the front of the box create a window by marking and cutting 2 inches all around with a Xacto Knife. How to Make a cake delivery box|Learn how to transform a regular cake box to fit your cakes|How to set up the cake box for transport
  5. Add a piece of cellophane wrap and tape all around.  This creates a window.  I like creating a window so that I can see the cake without the dreaded surprise. How to Make a cake delivery box|Learn how to transform a regular cake box to fit your cakes|How to set up the cake box for transport

In the summer, I like to use the cake porter from Innovative Sugarworks.   The cake porter is insulated which keeps the cake cool.  For additional piece of mind, add dry ice to keep it extra cold.  How to Make a cake delivery box|Learn how to transform a regular cake box to fit your cakes|How to set up the cake box for transport
