A few weeks ago, I celebrated *cough* my 21st birthday. I wanted to make my own birthday cake. You heard right… Nothing fancy, only a few criteria, it had to have chocolate…. and maybe a sugar shoe as a topper. It is no secret I like shoes. Therefore, I baked a small chocolate cake that I used to make a shoe box.
To stay on trend, I decided on a floral shoe. I purchased a beautiful floral edible wafer paper on Etsy. The only problem… they did not have green, and I have never worked with wafer paper before. Therefore, I was not sure how the final product was going to turn out.
First, I made the heel of the shoe. Once I received the wafer paper in the mail; I then added a small piece of wafer paper to gum paste colored to the shade of the paper (turquoise). This was added to the heel of the shoe very carefully. It was beautiful… However, the front section of the heel curled and it didn’t adhere as close as I wanted it to. At that point, I removed the wafer paper from the heel and started all over again.
I added the turquoise gum paste to the heel. Once the gum paste was dried, it was time to put the shoe together. Adding the wafer paper and the gum paste to the shoe was very difficult. The wafer paper felt like it was going to crumble between my fingers and would not adhere to the sole. The shoe looked okay but it needed some more love. I made a small bow from wafer paper and added it to the front. Then, I painted the heel and the sole of the shoe gold. It did not come out the way I expected. Subsequently…I decided to make a second pair. I know what you’re thinking. Why? Well, since it was my birthday, I did not want a cake without the shoe topper.
For the second pair of shoes, I made a traditional black sugar shoe with red bottoms and tan inside. The final shoe.
