Donut and coffee anyone? I mean a cake shaped like a donut and a coffee cup. The idea for this donut cake came from my son’s love for Dunkin Donut’s vanilla donut. Yep, he is that specific about his donut. He is so serious about this that he refuses any non-Dunkin Donuts donut. A few weeks ago while we were in Pennsylvania, we ordered breakfast at the hotel’s cafe. They had some great looking vanilla donuts, so of course, I ordered two for my son. After placing the order my son refused to eat donuts. Nope, he wouldn’t even take a bite.
That is when I thought, hmm maybe I should recreate this into a cake. Then I thought who has donuts without coffee? Well… other than me because any amount of coffee makes my heart race. So… It was officially a plan, a 3D donut cake, and a coffee cup cake.
This was one of the easiest cakes I have ever made. It is much easier than the Giant Macaron Cake I made last year. I was finished with the cake in less than 2 hours. Now I wish all my cakes were like this.

To make the 3D Donut cakes take two 6-inch cakes place one on top of each other and carve around the edges using a paring knife. Only taking a little at a time to get a rounded edge.
Then carve at little at the bottom of the cake to get the shape of the donut.
Once you are happy with the look, use a small circle cutter and remove the center of the cake.
Remove the top layer and add frosting cake.
Then crumb coat the outside with tan frosting or white. Place in the refrigerator to chill. Then add a final coat and smooth. Place in the refrigerator to chill.
While the cake is in the refrigerator, roll out a piece of pink fondant.
Using the template cut out the donut shape using an X-acto knife or scalpel. Using the small cutter remove the center or cut out using the template. The template is in our Free Resource Library click here to get access.
Remove cake from the refrigerator and add the fondant on top.
Add shortening to the fondant, then sprinkle the rainbow sprinkles everywhere. This is where the more sprinkles the better.
That’s it for the donut cake. Now it’s time for coffee.
Melt the white candy melt according to the instructions. Then add the candy melt to a styrofoam cup
Swirl it all around and use a brush to add chocolate to the sides. Then place in the refrigerator. Add a second coat. Then carefully remove from the cup. Voila, you have a hot coffee cup.
Now it’s time for Cake. Take three different size circle cutters and cut out three pieces of cake from the 8-inch cake. You are going to add the cakes from the smallest to the largest. Add the smallest piece of cake to the cup then add frosting.
Add the next layer of cake, then frosting until the cake is flush against the top. Don’t worry about the jagged edges of the cup.
Then add some mocha chocolate frosting to the top of the cake. You can pipe it on or add and smooth with a spatula. I added some ganache on top. Which in hindsight now it looks like hot chocolate my favorite.
That’s it you now have a donut cake and a coffee cake.
Different view.
